Hello, Adventurers!
Have you been to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve?

It’s one of the largest and most captivating nature areas in Singapore. In this blog post, we will explore five compelling reasons why you should consider visiting Sungai Buloh. Stick around till the end for some valuable tips you should know before visiting.
Let’s begin!
To Look for Wild Crocodiles

The first time I ever set foot in Sungei Buloh was years ago, and my reason for coming remains the same: to catch a glimpse of wild crocodiles.
Number 1 on our list is the thrill of searching for these magnificent reptiles. There’s nothing quite like the excitement of spotting a massive lizard in its natural habitat – it’s like discovering a living dinosaur!

While they can be incredibly challenging to find due to their superb camouflage skills, the satisfaction of finally locating one is unparalleled. The best areas to spot them are around the tidal ponds. Personally, I’ve had success in these regions, and there have even been sightings of baby crocodiles! Just remember to stay on the designated trails and maintain a safe distance.
To Meet Our Long Lost Relatives

Our second reason to visit Sungai Buloh is to reconnect with our long-lost relatives – the long-tailed Macaques. These charming primates thrive in this slice of the nature reserve.
Observing these macaque families going about their daily lives is a heartwarming experience. However, it’s essential to keep a respectful distance and avoid tempting them with food items.

To See Smooth-Coated Otters

Come here to have a close encounter with the critically endangered smooth-coated otters of Singapore. These adorable and cheeky creatures are an absolute joy to watch.

One remarkable anecdote involves an otter bravely challenging a crocodile many times its size over a piece of dry land – and winning! So, keep an eye out for these spirited otters; they are always up to something exciting.
To See Birds

Between August and March, Singapore becomes a pitstop for many migratory bird species seeking refuge from winter, and Sungei Buloh is one of their favorite destinations.

You can sit in the well-placed hideouts and comfortably watch these birds indulge in their mudflats buffet feast. Depending on your luck, you might even spot some rare bird species during your visit.
To See Big Monitor Lizards

While not as colossal as the crocodiles, the big monitor lizards at Sungei Buloh radiate a similar sense of awe. These Malayan monitors are thriving in this habitat, and during each visit, you can expect to encounter at least five of these impressive reptiles.

As with other wildlife, remember to admire them from a safe distance.
Bonus Reasons
Here are some additional reasons to explore Sungei Buloh:
- Fruit Bats: You might catch a glimpse of these fascinating creatures.

- Crazy Amount of Fishes: The reserve is teeming with diverse fish species, and you might witness some intriguing behaviors, such as needlefish spearing other fish.

- Insects: From dragonflies and spiders to tiny emerald bugs and ants, the insect life here is diverse and fascinating.

Tips You Should Know
How to Get Here
Getting to and from Sungei Buloh can be a bit tricky, depending on the day:

- Option 1 (Weekdays): Take the MRT train to Kranji station and then hop on bus 925 to reach the southern part of the visitor center.

- Option 2 (Saturdays): On Saturdays, you can use Option 1 and also take the Kranji Farms Shuttlebus, which gets you closer to the reserve for a fee of $5 per person per day.

- Option 3 (Sundays and Public Holidays): On Sundays and public holidays, you can combine the shuttlebus with bus 925M, which follows a route similar to the shuttlebus.
- Option 4: Taxis are an option, but be cautious as it can be challenging to find a taxi for your return journey due to the remote location.

- Option 5 (Driving): If you have a vehicle, there is usually ample parking available. A cost-effective approach is to take a taxi to the Wetland Centre, explore the tidal ponds, mangrove boardwalk, and coastal trail, and then catch bus 925 for your return.
How to Maximize Animal Sightings
To increase your chances of spotting wildlife:

- Come Early: Visit when the gates open at 7 am to enjoy the tranquility of the reserve before the crowds arrive.

- Walk Slowly: Take your time exploring Sungei Buloh, as many wondrous creatures are waiting to be discovered. Keep your eyes open for snakes, mudskippers, otters, and more.
