Overview of the Park

First, let me give you a run down of the park

The whole bird park is quite big…

Looking at the park map, this is what we have

  1. Heart of Africa
  2. Wings of Asia
  3. The Sky Amphitheatre
  4. Crimson Wetlands
  5. Amazonian Jewel
  6. Songs of the Forest
  7. Lory Loft
  8. Mysterious Papua
  9. Australian Outback
  10. Penguin Cove
  11. Winged Sanctuary

8 of them are WALK IN Aviaries

You’ll be walking on elevated boardwalks through large open area where the birds can fly freely. It’s amazing

Although yes they are still inside a “cage, it’s a much happier sight compared to seeing them confined in small spaces.

In most of the aviaries, the boardwalks are built as high as the trees. So you have a very good eye-level view of the birds in the trees – Then When you look down, you get a “bird’s” eye view of the ground-dwelling birds!! Who’s the bird now???

Even more amazing, all of the aviaries have these large air conditioned areas with lots of interactive display. You can sit and rest or walk around and learn fun facts about the bird in the zone.

These AirConditioned areas make daytime visit much more bearable.

Now let’s get close and personal into the Aviaries

Main Attractions

Heart of Africa

The Heart of AFrica is the BIGGEST aviary in the park. It simulating a forested valley from the African continent.

Along the tall boardwalks, you can find weaver birds and their intricately woven nests.

There are even higher platforms you can get to, to have a view from the canopy.

To get a closer look and even interact with the birds in person, you can join their feeding session at $8 per session.

It runs twice daily:

  • 09:30
  • 14:00

It was nice having them perched on your feeder and eating off your bowl. I feel that the 8$ cost price is worth the experience.

At the very least, i highly recommend being here to watch the feeding session because during feeding many of the birds will gather, making it easier to watch them.

For the beautiful scenery and fantastic array of colorful birds, The Heart of Africa gets a 4.5/5

Wings of Asia

This section has a familiar oriental theme. Here’s my favorite spot: a hut by terraces of paddy field:

It feels so laid back. There are really big birds like the storks and pelican.

Similarly, theres an option to join a session to feed them – BUT I don’t really like this feeding session, because you wont really get to interact with the birds.

You’ll be standing at this high platform while the birds pitifully wait for you to throw some fishes down.

It just doesnt feel the same…

It also runs twice daily at

  • 10:00
  • 16:30

but I’d say save your 8 dollars elsewhere.

I really like the Bali style architecture and statues though

The scenery is nice, but I find that the birds aren’t as exotic and lively

So I’ll give it a 4/5

Sky Amphitheatre

The Sky amphitheatre is where you can watch trained birds do tricks while learning fun facts about them.

There are 2 shows, generally running twice a day:

  1. Predators on Wings
    • 10:30
    • 14:30
  2. and Wings of the World
    • 12:30
    • 17:00

Predators on Wings

The Predator On Wings showcase very cool big predatory birds like the

  1. American Bald Eagle
  2. White-Bellied Sea Eagle
  3. Brahminy kite
  4. Buffy FIsh Owl
  5. Caracara
  6. KING Vulture
  7. Cinereous Vulture
  8. and the Marabou Stork

Many of these are EXCLUSIVELY seen in PoW

Wings of the World

The Wings of the World showcase iconic birds doing things you wouldn’t expect a bird to do.

The best part was when Amigo the Amazonian parrot sang everyone a Happy Birthday in perfect tune.

If you have to choose one, in my opinion the predators on wings is more entertaining. The experience of watching a big eagle up close and having a huge vulture flying overhead was magnificent.

Crimson Wetlands

The moment I stepped in, the name makes sense. Theres a pond full of Pink Flamingos, Scarlet Ibises, Roseate Spoonbills, and vibrant Macaws everywhere. There wasn’t a dull moment

Some of the birds here are really playful- borderline naughty. I had to run away from a Dusky Parrot who wanted to claim my tripod as his plaything.

I really love the energy and the color in the crimson wetlands. For the vibrant vivid color and energy of the inhabitants here, it’s a 4.5/5

Amazonian Jewels

This area simulates the Amazonian rainforest.

The birds here are very beautiful. Each of them have uniquely features you don’t normally see in a bird. Like this dorky Helmeted Currasow:

and the Andean Cock of the Rock

My favorite bird here is the toco Toucan!

While it’s got unique birds, I feel that the birds here are lacking the energy to make this place feels welcoming. So it’s a 3.5/5

Songs of the Forest

This area houses songbirds renowned for their melody.

However… I hear the cheerful lories from next door more than I hear the songbirds.

You can still spot very pretty birds in this aviary:

But the lories next door are really just too loud for me to truly enjoy the Songs of the Forest as it meant to be.

So i’ll give this place a 3.5/5

Lory Loft

Lory loft is one of the most cheerful place in the whole park. You can find a big family of lories playing around chirping all over the place.

Theres also a feeding session here that you can join to feed the Lories and Lorikeets! It is also $8, and runs twice daily:

  • 11:00
  • 15:30

BUT be prepared to be swarmed by the hungry birds

For the cuteness overload and unique experience of being assaulted by adorable lories it’s a 4/5.

Mysterious Papua

This area simulates the lowland area of Papua. The star of this area is the HUGE flightless bird, the Southern Cassowary:

There is also a feeding session with the huge cassowary. It was cool to see it close up and watch it gobble up big fruits. It runs daily at 13:00.

I’d recommend at least coming here in time to watch the feeding session because otherwise the Cassowary is a shy bird and might be hiding in the bushes instead.

I feel it’s lacking more birds here. So i’ll give it a 3.5 out of 5

Australian Outback

This area simulates the Australian countryside!

I find the Aussy outback abit dry. I feel that there isnt enough bird varieties compared to the other aviaries. So it’s a 3.5 out of 5

Penguin Cove

Penguin cove is a multi story “indoor aviary” recreating the antarctic glacier environment where penguins can happily dive and swim.

It felt very magical to watch them play. I feel like they are aware of how awestrucked the children… and the adults were.

They would come near the glass divider to give us a good show.

For the playful penguins and cool setup, It’s a 4/5.

Winged Sanctuary

The winged Sanctuary houses the birds in light cages

You can find the bigger hornbills here:

The most impressive bird here is the Philippine Eagle:

While there are impressive birds here, I don’t really like seeing the birds in the cages.

I know that it might be dangerous to be in a walk in aviary with these birds. One angry bird peck and someone might lose an eye, and we humans might be the true danger to the endangered birds.

But objectively, the Winged Sanctuary feels like a 3 out of 5.

How to Get There

I noticed that Mandai website already has a very good section covering how to get here.

So I’ve attached it here: https://www.mandai.com/en/bird-paradise/plan-your-visit/getting-here.html

Recommended Route

The park is quite big with many many things to see, but we all have finite energy and time. So I’ve come up with a route that can help you see the most of your time here.

Back to our park map: the main attractions in Bird Paradise is arranged like a ring with the main aviaries in the outer side and connecting paths through the center. The connecting lines means they are connected by a pathway

Steps

  • To get the best visit experience, arrive as soon as the park opens at 09:00,
  • Start from Heart of Africa and visit the feeding session at 09:30
  • It is worthwhile to join as a participant at $8 to get a closer interaction with the birds.
  • At the very least, I highly recommend being there to watch the feeding session because it’s where many of the birds will gather making it easier for you to watch the birds
  • Next, follow the boardwalks to Wings of Asia,
  • Theres also a feeding session here at 10:00,
  • But I don’t recommend joining this session because you don’t really get close to the birds while feeding
  • It’s a better experience just watching the feeding session
  • Next, follow the bali arch to get to the sky theatre.
  • You should be able to catch the 1030 show: Predators on Wings
  • The show lasts about 30 mins, after which you can visit the Crimson Wetlands
  • Will be good to catch some rest and some food here
  • I suggest bringing your own food here like packed sandwiches to save some money
  • Remember to eat OUTSIDE of the aviaries
  • For drinking water, there are these water refill points where you can get water for free so just bring your water bottles. Find them at the toilets at:
    • Guest Services
    • Heart of Africa
    • Egg Splash
    • Sky Amphitheatre
  • At 12:30, catch the Wings of the World at the Sky Amphitheatre again
  • After that, get to the Amazonian Jewels via the Crimson Wetlands. This is so that you can go through the next few aviaries in a straight line
  • Follow the boardwalks, you’ll also get to experience the Songs of the Forest and the Lory Loft
  • Theres also a feeding session in the Lory Loft but the timing doesn’t match this recommended route
  • Keep following the boardwalks and you’ll reach the Mysterious Papua
  • This route is also not suitable to meet the cassowary feeding session. But the bird is quite big so you might still be able to see it whether or not it’s feeding time.
  • Continuing on, you’ll reach the Australian Outback
  • Keep on going, you’ll reach the Penguin Cove
  • If you’re exhausted at this point, theres a nice air conditioned cafe here where you can recharge, with full view of the playful penguins.
  • If want to see big birds, visit the Winged Sanctuary before you go
  • The most impressive birds here are on the lower level, on the left hand side while facing the Winged Sanctuary sign

  2. Hi, thanks for the detailed itinerary. Can you please tell me how can I pair this with river wonders on the same day?

    • Hi Rishabh, my apologies for missing your comment.

River Wonders is quite small and easy to explore. So you could cut off your time in Bird Paradise by 3:30, to head to RiverWonders.

    • Hi there, you could do the bird paradise from the morning up till about 4pm, then take ANY bus further into Mandai. I think it’s called Mandai East. Then you can spend the evening at river wonders 🙂
